SPECIALIST EDUCATION FACILITY FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES OPENED IN SOUTHAMPTON |

Cornerstone has opened a specialist education facility in Southampton for
children with disabilities this month (June 2006).
This new facility caters for children, aged between 10 and 16, who have Severe Learning Disability, Autism, Complex Needs.
Cornerstone will be offering specially designed education packages focusing on life skills with the emphasis on encouraging each child’s ability to engage in
the greater community.
The school has a communications base, multi-sensory, family and home management rooms an adventure playground with a large tarmac play area. Specialists professionals include teachers, special support, care and welfare assistants and a communications assistant. In addition, physiotherapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists will be regularly working with the children at the school.
Cornerstone Director of Care, Margaret Hanney, said: “We’re delighted to open the new school and further extend our facilities to ensure the children in our care can have the same life opportunities as any other child.”
The school will be open 38 weeks each year and teaching time will be 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday.
In addition to its new education facility, Cornerstone also provides residential
disabilities and behavioural resources, respite care, single placements, 24-hour support within the family home, Outreach Support Staff, Secure and Welfare Escorts, Qualified Social Workers and Social Work Assistants.
